1) There are 7 major manufacturers in the U.S., Starkey, Oticon, Widex, Phonak, Siemens, Unitron and GN ReSound.
2) Along with there being several different styles of hearing aids (what they look like), there are also several different levels of technology. The level of technology is generally what dictates the price of hearing aids.
3) The price of hearing aids can range anywhere from $1000- $1500 per aid for entry level technology to $2500-$3500 per aid for top level technology.
4) Hearing aids do amplify all sounds, although now they can suppress background noise. However, they cannot get rid of background noise. So, if you have had a hearing loss for a few years, you will have to adjust to hearing many sounds you have not been hearing for a few years.
5) When you have your hearing evaluated, it is the job of the Audiologist to discuss all of the above with you if appropriate.
